When it comes to Fall dressing, is there anything more appealing than getting your hands on that perfect chic coat? We’re talking about the one that MAKES your outfit. The one you know you need this season. Maybe it’s a casual leather moto jacket to throw on for your casual weekend trip, or maybe it’s the long formal duster that is the perfect winter companion to your Nutcracker ballet-ready cocktail dress.
While many coats are classic and stand the test of trends season after season, this Fall’s collections have given us a bevy of new and well-loved shapes and colors. From casual and comfortable- even going so far as to simply drape a blanket around your shoulders- to a feminine and preppy pastel confection, there are so many options to choose from. Should Fall be called the season of the coat? You tell us.
Oversized and Minimal
There’s nothing chic than a classic swing coat. Slightly oversized, just enough to lay perfectly over a full skirt or slide comfortably over a cozy cashmere sweater- these beauties are able to transform even then most casual boyfriend jean outfit into a pulled together masterpiece. Hermes sent the perfect minimal overcoats down the runway for Fall, and Kenzo’s printed versions were as fun as they were appropriate.
Many designers added a tie to their classic looks, created a robe-like wrap coat. Altazurra’s perfect teal wrap was not only classic, but the color gave it a gorgeous edge. Your coat doesn’t have to come with its own tie, though! Take a page out of Max Mara’s book and grab a contrasting belt to wrap around your waist. Maybe you have an old trench coat you never wear? Or the beat up black leather belt? So chic over a camel coat! For a less expensive version of the look, reach to Asos and Forever 21, both you have seriously upped their coat games this season!
Fur & Shearling
Gone are the days of a light fur lining. We’re talking about full fur coats, as glamorous and ostentatious as you can imagine. Oscar de la Renta through bulging fur jackets over his classic glamour for fall. Fuzzy shearling is a more casual option, and again- the bigger, the better. Burberry’s classic shearling was back on the runway for fall, with even bigger collars of fuzzy goodness, and at Emilio Pucci, we found shearling inside already lux fur jackets. So cozy! Check out Alice + Olivia for some equally statement-making options.
The poncho is back! The Spring runways cemented the 1970s resurgence in fashion, but we’ve been seeing it for a while, and not least noticeably in the expansion of blanket coats, shawls, and ponchos on the Fall runways. Burberry’s monogrammed option has already been seen all over the streets, on the likes of Olivia Palermo, Rosie Huntington Whiteley, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Roberto Cavalli and Etro both showed similar options- Cavalli’s tying in the fur trend to add a dramatic collar. Stella McCartney is selling them, Isabel Marant has a Kaftan Coat, everywhere you look, you can’t get away from this easy and comfy option. Topshop and Nasty Gal are both selling chic options to grab the look for less!
We don’t believe in the “white after Labor Day” rule anymore. After all, what would we do without our “winter whites?” There’s something about wrapping up in creams and white while the outside is being coated in snow that just makes you feel perfectly ready for the holidays. We’ve decided this also applies to pastels, and apparently, the Fall runways agreed with us. Easter colors are no longer just for Easter!
That is- unless you want to argue with Gucci or Matthew Williamson. A gorgeous chilly blue or a cool pink or lavender are perfect choices for a feminine touch. Plus, we love the 60s feel a pastel gives your outfit. Favorites like Tibi and Joie are great places to find your own version of this trend!
