Hiking has so many benefits. It is great exercise. You can have fun solo, with your partner, or with your whole family. If you’re looking to learn about a new country it is a way to authentically experience a new culture. Hiking your way through Europe will be an unforgettable experience.

These hikes offer natural beauty of their countries, but you may find more than a great panoramic. Be on the lookout of ancient ruins, castles, and local culture.

1. Austria makes for a peaceful holiday to enjoy nature and all of its beauty. The state of Tyrol brims over with hiking and picturesque treks. Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, is tucked into Karwendel Alps. There are many romantic cabins and hotels to honeymoon or rekindle your romance between the fabulous hiking. To have a view of Inn Valley, walk through the mostly flat Swiss pines plantation at Zirbenweg. To have even better views, take the Glungezer chairlift or Patscherkofel cable car. Also, take the time to stop at one of the restruants to have some Austrian cuisine. Hiking Zirbenweg is a smooth section of the much longer Adlerweg (Eagle Trail) that spans across all of Tyrol. A family could make this the beginning of the Eagle Trail and spend more time exploring Austria and the Alps.

2. Devin Castle is hidden in Bratislava, Slovakia. After about two hours of hiking, the castle emerges as a monument to the long history of Europe. Devon Castle boasts a history spanning back to the 9th Century with a settlement long before. After hiking to the castle, there are more trails with excellent views of both the Danube River and Morava River. This trek is worth the climb to see the splendor of nature and history converge. Take a picnic and spend some time getting to know your partner with the scenic backdrop and the sound of flowing rivers.

3. Mount Parnassus towers over Delphi, Greece. Delphi was once the spiritual center of Ancient Greece. It’s easy to see how the Greeks could look on these views and feel spiritual. The ruins are perched high on the limestone mountain with a view of the Gulf of Corinth and the largest olive grove in Greece. This trek is beautiful in any season, offering lush views or snow-capped mountains. Families with children will have opportunity to learn about Ancient History as well as bond over the scenery. While couples will have an opportunity to step away from the world and appreciate each other.

4. Iceland may be far off the beaten track, but there is plenty to see here. If your trip is between March and September, the Northern Lights will be in full view. Hike through glaciers to the far North and see what so few people have seen. The Blue Mountains in Iceland have caves made from Bláhnjúkur volcano eruptions prefect for exploring in the daylight- just be sure to wear head protection! Relish the stars laced with the Northern Lights with your partner snuggled in close.

5. The Rota Vicentina is a network of walking trails in Southwest Portugal. If you’re looking for a tranquil, untouched part of the world, this may be it! Rota Vicentina covers some of the most unspoiled beaches in all of Europe. The trails cover about 400 kilometres. Children would enjoy the relative ease of this hike. The whole family will love the ocean so close. If you do get too hot, just stop and splash in the water! The best times to walk this preserved treasure is from September until June to avoid the extreme summers.
